One survivor, Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, eventually made his way back to Spain and recounted tales of their voyage, sparking European interest in the region. While Tampa wasn't officially settled until the 19th century, Narvaez's ill-fated expedition laid the groundwork for future exploration and ultimately the city's founding.
